Radio and my missing friend...

I miss my friend Mike Halloran!  He's still around and I know he's cooking something up, but I don't work with him anymore and that's a bummer!  On the plus side I do get to host the FTP show on Sunday evening's, a show he named after me F#*% Tim Pyles!  So tune in every Sunday at 7pm for the FTP show, an hour of new music...

San Diego

All I can say is this town is becoming everything I ever wanted and more.  It's too much almost!  From great local music to becoming a hub for craft brewing, this town has the things to offer I've seen in other cities around the country.  Now we have them too!  I'll never forget visitng Tornado in Lower Haight Asbury and being amazed at the great craft beers they had to offer, well, guess what?  We got one here in SD and we even have Critical Mass, another thing I saw that first in SF.  Yup, San Diego is finally growing up, but it's been happening at a faster rate than your average hipster can keep up with.  There can be too much of a good thing!  I myself have had a hard time keeping up, but I'm excited to try harder this year!  From Tin Can Ale House to The Loft on the campus of UCSD, SD you're all grown up!

San Diego Music Awards

What a great night at Viejas!  Yeah I know it's a long drive, but they do donate a lot of the elements that make it go down the way it does.  I was excited to present again with my good friend Coe Lewis of KGB.  I had the pleasure of announcing the Best Alternative act, which was Apes Of Wrath, but guess what they weren't even there!  Doh!  Highlights for me Wayne Kramer with The Zeros, The Burning Of Rome's pigs heads and all the support I get from the local bands!  My thanks goes out to all of you!

Musings...

San Diego, CA and it’s diverse music scene is what were here to talk about, some positive things and maybe a few areas that could use some help. I’ve lived almost my entire life here, coming to Southern California from Minnesota at too early of an age to remember. I cut my teeth on the mean streets of La Jolla and found my musical inspiration in my peers. Early Rock n Roll memories include seeing KISS with Cheap Track in the mid-70's at the Sports Arena to Johnny Kat (local band) at the Presbyterian Church on the top of Mt. Soledad, those were the early days of my youth. Then a friend of mine took me to see The Clash with The English Beat at Golden Hall, shortly thereafter I was embracing the 80's Mod scene, even getting a Vespa and joining a scooter club, legendary Secret Society Scooter Club to be exact. After that I’ve experienced most of what SD has to offer from the Goth, Rave, rockabilly, swing, punk ah hell all of it! I’ve been a die hard fan in the lean years to being amazed at what SD has to offer now, it’s becoming the city I’ve always wanted it to be! So let’s talk about it! On the positive side there are more bands and cool venues then ever before! Newcomers or re-inventions like the Soda Bar, The Radio Room, Beauty Bar, U-31, Bar Pink, King’s Music, The Ruby Room and the Royal Dive in Oceanside have made no shortage of cool places to play outside of the Casbah. When talking about bands I don’t even know where to begin, there are SO many of them and SO many are good! The problem though are the fans, we still need MORE of them! It used to be on any given night there might be one or two cool things to do, now it’s more like five. So it spreads the scene a little to thin sometimes. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and I love the beach, the outdoors and what not, but all of these things don’t make this a very Rock N Roll town! Where are my leather clad rockers? The sound of SD is not what it was when we were supposed to be the next Seattle, some of it’s still around but the diversity, oh the diversity, it’s EPIC I tell ya! What does the future bring? Who knows, but I can tell you this, it will be nothing short of amazing! When I was younger people left SD to find a career in music or art, now they come here for it! Yes they come HERE for it! I’ve met loads of transplants that collectively are making this a much better place for all of us! We have culture in SD, YES we have culture - so go out and be apart of it! Feb 23, 2009
