Articles as seen in MUSIC MATTERS MAGAZINE.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2007

Oh what a glorious time of year! My favorite way to describe the holidays is Merry

Chrismahanukwanzakah and Happy New Year!
I’ve never been more excited about the arrival of Santa Claus! I have a long list and I’ve been a very, very good boy! And my hometown San Diego is getting better and better! Let me tell you how!

One thing I’m excited about is the arrival of Toronado to San Diego. One of the premier beer bars in San Francisco, they are now opening their first satellite bar in North Park. This bar was the inspiration for Live Wire. At press time the bar was hoping for a Halloween Grand Opening, but that has come and gone. So the hope is to have it open New Years Eve of sometime early 2008! www.toronado.com

Swami’s Sunday Mass
starts at 2pm and is almost every Sunday at Bar Pink Elephant in North Park, plus it’s free! Handpicked bands by John Reis aka Swami or even Speedo, from legendary bands Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes and a yet to be named new band, that will achieve legendary status within days! www.myspace.com/barpinkelephant or www.barpinkelephant.com

Local Shows are all over the San Diego airwaves and the talent pool has grown soo much, when it comes to bands that call SD home! Sweet Home San Diego! Let’s look when to tune in to catch or request your favorite local artist!

91X’s "Loudspeaker" airs every Monday 1am to 3am featuring the talents of long time local music aficionado Al Guerra. www.91X.com

KPRI’s "The KPRI Homegrown Hour" airs every Saturday night from 9pm to 10pm with host Astra Kelly, who is actually an artist herself! www.kprifm.com and www.myspace.com/astrakelly

Rock 105.3's "Loud and Local" airs every Sunday night from 8pm to 11pm and is hosted by Missi! www.kioz.com

Sophie 103.7's "Unsigned Sunday" is a weekly feature highlighting unsigned San Diego acts, and indie acts from all over. They play six unsigned bands each Sunday during the day. Then listeners can vote on their favorite. www.radiosophie.com

FM94/9's "The Local 94/9" airs every Sunday from 8pm to 10pm and is hosted by well, yours truly... www.fm949sd.com

That’s about it and all of these programs can be streamed or even listened to On-Demand! If you are a local band, maybe send in your disc! Long Live Local Music!

Switchfoot has announced fall tour plans with Relient K.
For the tour the band is partnering with Habitat For Humanity, and both bands are donating $1 from every ticket sold to this organization committed to building homes for those in need here in the US and abroad. The closest appearance will be 11.27.07 in Irvine, CA at the UCI Bren Events Center. www.switchfoot.com or www.habitat.org

P.O.D. will be back soon with new material with the reformed original line-up! Look for a progressive direction from these guy’s who have found influence from one of the greatest band’s ever Bad Brains, among others! These guy’s have been diverse, don’t ever count them out! www.payableondeath.com

I also want to say a special thanks to Troy Johnson
for all that he has done for local music over his year’s at City Beat. He recently stepped down as Music Editor and will be showing up soon at Riviera Magazine, plus his book will soon be published - 'Family Outing,' a memoir, coming June 2008 on Arcade Publishing. Between Fox Rox, Slamm, City Beat, Hosting the San Diego Music Awards to countless untold stories, this man has done it all! Oh yeah can’t forget the Padres Pre-Pre-Game show! Thanks Troy Johnson for all you’ve done for me personally and all the music you’ve exposed to the people of San Diego! We’ll miss your musing’s, but surely we’ll see your face at the Casbah once in awhile!

October 5th, 2007 — Troy Johnson
Sometimes it’s time. After 5 years plus a bunch of minutes, I am leaving CityBeat. There’s no blood on the office walls. Just sweat stains on an office chair. I love this paper lifestyle and the people in it. But it’s time to put down the demo CD and untunnel the vision. Effective Oct. 29, I will become the Senior Editor at RIVIERA magazine.Seriously, thanks.

There is now an opening for part-time music editor at a great paper. Email davidr@sdcitybeat.com if you’re that person.

Other than that have a great holiday time, however you care to spend it or even celebrate at all! Do what you want to, what you feel is right, just don’t tell me what to do! Merry Chrismahanukwanzakah and shoot me an e-mail by checking out www.thelocalpyle.com

SEPTEMBER 2007

Local mostly to San Diego, but I love the energy that is Southern California!  We have all these great cities in ONE state!  Places that matter, where the Music Matters!  I’ve been enjoying my Summer, all the great shows, new venues, but mostly all of you - my friends!  I’m a little upset that the Bayside venue by the convention center downtown is done hosting Rock shows, but what are you gonna do! I’ve been getting around checking out new bands, like No One Home, The Armada and The Mojave to name a few that I like!  I really enjoyed Comic-Con this year, but I’ve heard it might be moving to Vegas and that also makes me sad!  But again what are ya gonna do?  Go to Vegas, I guess!

Lastly some shameless self promotion, please check out www.thelocalpyle.com

There are exclusive performances from some of SD's best bands, photos, Local Pyle archive and hours of fun!  No really and it will get better, but feedback from you is requested!  Don’t worry about hurting my feelings, I can take it!  On with some news you can use!

BAR PINK ELEPHANT
Bar Pink Elephant (www.barpinkelephant.com) is partly owned by John Reis aka Swami (Hot Snakes, Pitchfork, Back Off Cupids, Drive Like Jehu, Rocket From The Crypt, Conservative Itch, The Sultans) and is located in the North Park area of San Diego.  Soon to be featuring bands, the venue just opened to stellar revues!   Any fan of anything John Reis has ever done should run to check this place out!  And bands start submitting, cause this place WILL be doing shows!  Not only does this guy have a record label (www.swamirecords.com) and a radio show (www.fm949sd.com), he’s in the process of getting ready to unleash a new project on the world!

The Van’s Warped Tour has selected The Fabulous Rudies for the entire national tour in the Summer of 2007 (www.warpedtour.com). The band was the 2nd group announced, following the announcement of the legendary punk group Bad Religion.

With members from all over the country and a female lead singer from Germany, the band brings an eclectic mix of musical talent to the national tour. The Warped Tour founder and organizer, Kevin Lyman has said that The Fabulous Rudies are "on the crest of the next wave in alternative music."
